BOX OVEN FROM CARDBOARD

1 empty cardboard box with flaps
heavy duty aluminum foil
4 empty soda cans (I like using the smaller ones, like the ones that pineapple juice or V-8 juice come in.)
charcoal

1.) Cover box TOTALLY in aluminum foil, inside and out, flaps and all, better to much
than too less.

2.) Fill the cans half way with water. Lay box flat on its side so the opening is facing you.
Put soda cans in the box on the four corners so it can hold up what you are cooking.

3.) Place the dish with your food on the soda cans.

4.) Place one charcoal in the box under the dish for every 40 degrees you want your oven
to be.  Prepare: Get the charcoal ready to cook by starting them and waiting until they are white.
Have you ever been camping and needed or wanted an oven, here is that will do the trick and it works very well.  You will need:

How to clean rust off cast iron skillets.

My mom used a white vinegar solution 2 parts vinegar 1 part water to clean
the rust off cast iron pans.

She would soak the pan overnight in the vinegar solution and the vinegar just dissolves the rust.

Very rusty pans may take an extra evening. Don't leave it in there too long or you will not have a pan. The vinegar actually dissolves the metal.

This would work on new cast iron pans also.

I  collect antique cast iron pans and after cleaning the old grease off them many times they are rusty
under the old seasoning.

I did not know it was this simple until my mother taught me, you know the moms out there are good for teaching us stuff after all. Who would have thought?
Home made Anti-Bacterial Spray (Cleaner Concentrate)

  1               pint  rubbing alcohol
  2               Tbsp  ammonia
  2                tsp  Dawn dish soap
1               drop  food coloring -- (opt. I like green)

Concentrate:  Recycle a heavy-plastic gallon apple juice jug (NOT a
milk jug). Pour in cleaning ingredients, filling with water. I add the Dawn dish soap after the water, less suds. Add food coloring, if wanted. Shake gently but enough to mix.  Cleaner can be used full strength but it works just as well diluted and you save money.

To Dilute:  Fill a squirt bottle, half and half, with tap water and concentrate. This cleaner is totally safe on food surfaces; spray and leave on the surface for 10 minutes, before wiping. You needn't rinse when used diluted, but you'd want to rinse, if not diluted
 Yield:     "1 gallon"
10 New Uses for Olive Oil

“Olive oil is a good lubricant because its molecules easily slide past one another, thereby helping solid objects to overcome friction,” says Wolke. “Its film also fills up microscopic rough spots in surfaces, making them look polished and shiny.”

  1. Did you know that olive oil can provide a closer shave when used in place of shaving cream. So if you ever run out of shaving cream, just visit the kitchen.

 2. Shinning stainless steel can be tricky and many cleaning standbys, such as ammonia, can dull and even corrode chrome and stainless steel. Olive oil, however, is a safe and effective shining agent.

3. Don't pay for those expensive eye makeup removers, just dab a little under the eyes and rinse off with a washcloth.

4. Prevent wax from sticking to a candle holder. Rub a thin coat on the base of the holder before inserting a candle. Dripped wax should peel away easily.

5. Adding a 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon of olive oil to your cat’s food to help prevent hair balls.

6. Moisturize cuticles. Apply a small amount of olive oil to the nail beds.

7. Treat dry skin. Rub a thin layer over the skin after a shower or a waxing.

8. Un-stick a zipper. Using a Q-tip, apply a drop to lubricate the teeth. (Avoid touching the fabric.) The zipper should move up and down freely.

9. Dust wooden furniture. Apply a bit of oil to a cloth and wipe.

10. Silence squeaky doors. Lubricate hinges by applying a small dab to a cloth, then wiping the top of the hinges so that the oil runs down the sides.

Our family used this for years, us kids did not know we could buy mixes like this at the store until we were much older.  Enjoy

Shake-N-Bake Mix

1 cup four
2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 cup cracker crumbs
1/2 teaspoon of each Oregano, Thyme, Basil, Paprika
1/2 cup bread crumbs

Mix all ingredients together, place 1/2 of mixture in a plastic bag.  Put your chicken, pork chops, or hamburger patties in the plastic bag and shake. Cook meat in the oven at 350 degrees for about 30 to 40 minutes until done.
This is one we always fixed over the holidays.

Ice Box Fruit Cake

1 pound graham crackers
1 pound pecans
1 pound small marshmallows
1 can Eagle Brand milk
1 pound red candied cherries
1 pound green candied cherries
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon allspice

Crush crackers, add chopped nuts, marshmallows, cherries, and spices.  Pour Eagle Brand milk over and mix well.  Line a large pan with foil and pack mixture in firmly.  Refrigerate at least 2 hours.  Break into pieces or cut into squares.

Chocolate Gravy

Here is a recipe from my childhood called Chocolate Gravy.  My mom would fix this from breakfast for us as a treat.  She always served it with warm biscuits and butter.  Hope you enjoy it as much as we have.

1 1/2 cups of sugar
3 tablespoons of cocoa
3 tablespoons of flour
2 1/2 to 3 cups of water
touch of vanilla (about a 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon)

Place all ingredents in a sauce pan and bring to a boil.  It will not be thick like white gravy, but will be a nice thick sauce consistance.  Can also be used over ice cream, cakes, just about anything that you like chocolate sauce over. But over warm biscuits, it is the best.
